FIRST at 20: Youth Perspectives, Shifting Spaces, and the Future of Independent Cinema
In July 2026, Cut2Thought was invited to Xining, Qinghai as accredited media to provide full on-site coverage of the 20th FIRST International Film Festival. As a crucial space for Sinophone youth filmmakers and independent cinema, FIRST serves not only as a stage for contemporary young directors to showcase their narrative ambitions and aesthetic explorations, but also as a vital window for observing today's Chinese-language film ecosystem, creative struggles, and shifting audiences.
To offer a multi-dimensional look at this year's cultural ecosystem and cinematic texts, the C2T team explored two core angles—on-site dynamics and textual criticism—bringing together engaging dialogues from different perspectives:
Vol. 1 Site, Space & Festival Logistics
The first episode turns its focus to the festival's physical spaces and operating mechanics. From ticketing rules, screening schedules, and venue flow, to how Xining shapes the festival's atmosphere as a geographic host, we systematically unpack a “FIRST Survival Guide”—one that blends practical advice with local cultural observations—capturing the lived reality and true experience of those on the ground.
Vol. 2 Narrative, Form & Feature Films
The second episode returns to the cinema itself, focusing on core feature films from the Main Competition and parallel sections. Using film genre and aesthetic form as a base, we offer an in-depth breakdown of key shortlisted works, including Main Competition fiction features (Medium Rare, Turbulence, Beware of the Tiger), Main Competition documentaries (Ever Since, The River is Home, Between Love and You), and the “HER FRAME” section (Confessions of a Mole). The discussion circles around genuine viewing experiences, narrative ethics, camera language, female perspectives, and how young creators engage with real-world issues, creating a rich collision of ideas across diverse viewpoints.
